Gas Apps & Tools
Gas price apps do one useful thing well: they tell you what a gallon costs nearby before you commit to a station. On a typical fill-up the spread between the cheapest and most expensive station within a few miles is often 20 to 40 cents a gallon, which is worth more than most driving tactics.
The catch is the detour. A station that's meaningfully cheaper but several miles off your route can easily consume the savings in the fuel and time it takes to reach it, and the apps are not motivated to point this out. The rule that survives every comparison in this category is simple: cheap gas is worth it when it's on the way, and rarely worth a special trip. The guides here evaluate each app on that basis rather than on feature lists.
Cash-back apps work differently from price-comparison apps and are frequently confused with them: they pay you after the fact rather than finding a lower posted price, which means they can stack with a rewards card. Tracking tools are the third group, and matter mostly if you're doing the budgeting work in the fundamentals category or claiming mileage deductions. The comparisons below cover all three.
