EVs & Hybrids

The electrification debate is unusually bad at arithmetic. One side compares home charging at off-peak rates against premium gasoline; the other compares a road-trip fast-charging session against a hybrid's best-case highway figure. Both produce a satisfying number and neither describes a normal year of driving.

These guides use five-year totals, because that's the horizon over which a higher purchase price either does or doesn't get repaid, and they separate the variables that genuinely drive the answer. Where you charge dominates everything: home charging and public fast charging are different economic propositions, and a household without home charging often shouldn't assume the usual savings apply. Annual mileage matters next: high-mileage drivers repay a price premium quickly, low-mileage drivers may never repay it at all.

Two things get systematically underweighted, and both have guides here. Cold weather reduces usable range substantially, which is a real cost if it changes your charging behaviour. And incentives shift the maths more than efficiency does: the federal credit used to move break-even points by years, and it ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, so any comparison that still assumes it is out of date.
