Virginia Fuel Taxes: ≈31¢/gal + regional taxes
Virginia has a moderate state gas tax with regional add-ons. Virginia's statewide motor fuels tax is around 31 cents per gallon and is indexed to inflation. On top of that, the state levies an additional regional wholesale fuel tax in many planning districts to fund local transportation, so the effective rate varies slightly depending on where in Virginia you buy.

How Virginia Gets Its Gasoline
Virginia has no refineries and relies on the Colonial and Plantation pipeline systems running up from the Gulf Coast, plus waterborne deliveries into the Hampton Roads port area. Like the Carolinas, Virginia is exposed when the Colonial Pipeline goes down — the 2021 shutdown caused widespread outages across the state.

Northern Virginia around the D.C. suburbs generally posts the state's highest prices, reflecting higher land and operating costs. Richmond and Hampton Roads usually sit near the state average, while stations along the I-81 corridor and rural Southside often run cheapest.
