How North Dakota Gets Its Gasoline
North Dakota is the third-largest crude oil-producing state in the country thanks to the Bakken shale in its western half, but most of that crude leaves the state by pipeline and rail to be refined elsewhere. In-state refining centers on the Marathon refinery in Mandan, next to Bismarck, which covers much of North Dakota's demand, alongside a smaller diesel-focused refinery near Dickinson built to serve the oil fields.
Where Gas Is Cheapest and Most Expensive in North Dakota
Bismarck and Mandan, next to the refinery, usually post the state's lowest prices. Fargo, the largest city, sits on the Minnesota border and tracks Twin Cities-area supply more closely. Towns in the Bakken oil patch around Williston can see sharper price swings when drilling activity pushes demand up faster than local supply.
