How New Mexico Gets Its Gasoline
New Mexico is the second-largest crude oil-producing state in the country thanks to the Permian Basin in its southeast corner, but most of that crude leaves the state for refining elsewhere. In-state refining is limited mainly to HF Sinclair's Navajo refinery in Artesia; the rest of the state, including Albuquerque, draws additional supply by pipeline from refineries in El Paso, Texas.
Where Gas Is Cheapest and Most Expensive in New Mexico
Southeastern New Mexico, near the Artesia refinery and the Permian Basin oil fields, tends to see some of the state's lowest prices. Albuquerque and northern New Mexico, farther from in-state refining, generally run a bit closer to the national average.
