Montana has a state gas tax close to the national average. Montana's state gas tax is about 33 cents per gallon, close to the roughly 33.5-cent national average. The rate was phased up in steps between 2017 and 2023 under a state road-and-bridge funding law after decades of little change.

How Montana Gets Its Gasoline
Montana is a refining state. Four refineries operate here — three around Billings (Phillips 66, ExxonMobil, and CHS's plant in nearby Laurel) plus Calumet's refinery in Great Falls — processing crude from the Bakken region and Canada. That is a large amount of refining capacity for a state of just over a million people, and the Billings complex also supplies parts of Wyoming, Idaho, and eastern Washington. Western Montana draws its fuel from Billings through the Yellowstone Pipeline, which runs west to the Missoula area.
Where Gas Is Cheapest and Most Expensive in Montana
Billings, sitting next to the refineries, consistently has the lowest gas prices in Montana. Prices climb heading west: Missoula, Kalispell, and the Flathead sit at the end of the pipeline and pay more, and communities near Glacier and Yellowstone run higher still during the summer tourist season.
