About Gas Prices in Indiana
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) surveys fuel retailers weekly but doesn't publish a separate price for Indiana, so the price shown is the EIA's Midwest regional average for regular unleaded gasoline. Indiana has a high effective fuel tax for the Midwest. Indiana charges around 35 cents per gallon in excise tax and, like Michigan, also applies its 7% sales tax to gasoline. The combined effective state take often exceeds 50 cents per gallon, among the highest in the Midwest — though strong local supply keeps final pump prices closer to average than the tax level suggests.
Tax figures are approximate state-level taxes and fees per gallon of regular gasoline and exclude the 18.4¢/gal federal excise tax. Rates change, so verify current rates with the state's revenue or transportation department.
How Indiana Gets Its Gasoline
Northwest Indiana hosts the BP Whiting refinery, the largest refinery in the Midwest, and the state is laced with product pipelines serving the Chicago market. When Whiting has an unplanned outage, prices across Indiana and the wider Great Lakes region can jump 20–40 cents within days — and fall just as fast when it restarts.
Where Gas Is Cheapest and Most Expensive in Indiana
Indianapolis usually tracks close to the Midwest average with heavy competition along its interstate loop. Northwest Indiana towns like Hammond and Portage are strategically cheap compared to the Illinois side of the border, because Illinois drivers cross over to escape Cook County's stacked local fuel taxes.
